meet ASHLEIGH

Hi there! I’m Ashleigh, one of the co-founders of Bloom Literacy Centre. At Bloom my goal is to make literacy accessible, empowering, and joyful. I am a passionate literacy educator with over a decade of experience supporting students with diverse learning needs. I hold an undergraduate degree in Elementary Education with a minor in Special Education, a Master’s degree in Educational Psychology with a specialization in reading, writing, and oral language disabilities, and I am currently completing a Graduate Certificate in School Leadership at the University of Alberta. I am dedicated to on-going professional development and am always looking to enhance my skill set with a new course or training.

Since 2014, I have taught across elementary and junior high grades, with all of my teaching experience taking place in a specialized setting for students with learning disabilities. This work has shaped my deep understanding of how students learn to read and write—and how targeted, research-based instruction can create meaningful, lasting progress.

I have received training in multiple evidence-based reading intervention programs including but not limited to: Empower, Systematic Instruction in Phonological Awareness, Phonics, and Sight Words (SIPPS), UFLI Foundations, Seeing Stars, Reading Excellence and Word Attack Development Strategies (REWARDS), and Lindamood Phoneme Sequencing Program for Reading Spelling and Speech (LiPS). This knowledge enables me to design individualized, structured literacy programming that helps every student find success. I am especially passionate about helping students build confidence, strengthen foundational skills, and experience success as readers and writers.

meet ALYSSA

Hi , I’m Alyssa! I’m one of the co-founders of Bloom Literacy Centre. I graduated from the University of Alberta in 2015 with a Bachelors in Elementary Education and a minor in Educational Psychology. Over the last 10 years, I’ve worked in the classroom, led reading intervention programs and provided support and feedback to various classroom teachers through observations and collaboration.

My foundational knowledge is mainly derived from working with students in an early education classroom but I’ve also been trained in various programs that support early learners with reading and writing. Working with young students has allowed me to implement research-based teaching practices and programs such as Systematic Instruction in Phonological Awareness, Phonics, and Sight Words (SIPPS) and UFLI Foundations. This has allowed me to provide explicit instruction that builds strong foundational reading skills. As part of my passion for literacy, I’ve participated in the Language and Literacy Project, where I worked alongside other teachers, consultants and speech pathologists developing lessons for students with literacy and oral language difficulties.

During my time as a reading intervention teacher, I led parent information sessions for families within the community because I believe in the power of early literacy intervention and that a child’s reading success requires teachers AND families working together as a cohesive unit.

By closely monitoring student progress and using data to guide instruction, I strive to create an inclusive, structured learning experience where students can develop confidence, independence and long-term success.

meet ELLE

Hello! My name is Elle and I’m a member of the Bloom team. Being apart of the Bloom team allows me to utilize my specialized skill set to empower kids of all ages to become readers, and most importantly, see themselves as readers. I have embraced my passion for reading, and worked with diverse groups of students in Edmonton for the last 10 years.

I completed my Bachelors of Education, with a minor in Special Education at the University of Alberta in 2015. After teaching for seven years I was fuelled by the intensifying needs of my students to pursue a Masters in Educational Psychology with a specific focus in Reading, Writing, and Oral Language Disabilities. My passion for learning and continual professional growth led me to obtain a Graduate Certificate in School Leadership which I will complete in 2026.

Starting in 2016 I began working with adolescents in a congregated site for students with diagnosed learning disabilities. Teaching literacy to this population of learners showed me the power of research-based teaching practices, that are founded in the Science of Reading. Implementing a targeted, intensive, sequential, and systematic method of teaching allowed me to give students the tools to unlock their ability to read, which in turn opened their eyes to the endless possibilities they had as learners.

In addition to my formal undergraduate and graduate studies, I also have further knowledge and training in a variety of research-based literacy programs, including: REWARDS, Strategies Targeted Adolescent Reading Intervention (STARI), Seeing Stars, Systematic Instruction in Phonological Awareness, Phonics, and Sight Words (SIPPS), and UFLI Foundations. Having knowledge in a variety of different research-based programs allows me to develop instruction that is unique to each child’s individual needs and learning styles.
